End of year one

I can't believe the first year of Mu Alpha Theta at Norton high is just about over. I wish we could have done more this year. I will just hope for better things next year. We did accomplish a couple of things this year. We had two teams formed to participate in Moody's mega Math challenge. One team sent in a viable solution. Congratulations to them for working so hard. we also celebrated April as the National Math Awareness month. There were not too many students that tried the amazing race, but the teachers enjoyed themselves. We will have to find ways to make it better next year. There is still one more contest this year. On Friday May 1st we can download the question for the Siemans math contest.
Seniors will need to see me about getting their blue and yellow honor cord for graduation. Remember that you were supposed to complete 5 hours of service. You will need to show me that you have done that. please come to see me within the next two weeks. We will have one more meeting this year. The 4 officers should get together and decide on a date for that meeting.

Meeting 4-7-09

We discussed an activity to do during April which is math awareness month. You can visit www.mathaware.org to see more information. We decided to do the Amazing mathematics race.
The Amazing Mathematics Race

Each student that wants to participate will get question #1 from the Math Department page or the Math Honor Society page. Students will do research to find the answer. Once the student has an answer they will find on the faculty list which teacher wants this answer. They go to the teacher with their answer and get the teacher to sign the answer sheet. The teacher will then give them the next question and students will follow the same process. There are a total of 12 questions and the first 10 students to bring Mrs. Taylor all 12 answers signed by the appropriate teacher will win a large goody bag. The next 10 students win a medium size goody bag and the next ten win a small goody bag. This contest ends on April 30th.
Members of Mu alpha Theta need to submit possible questions with answers to Mrs. Taylor ASAP and members are asked to donate something for the goody bags because our club has not done any fundrasing yet.

Math Awareness Month

April is here and we still haven't made plans on what to do with the school to promote math awareness. The Mu Alpha Theta officers are planning a meeting for next week. At that time we can toss out some ideas and hopefully decide on an activity. My period E Pre-Calc class suggested a type of Amazing race with all math questions and puzzles. Let me know if you have any ideas.

Minutes from 3-4-09

Officers for the remainder of the year were chosen. They are listed to the right on this blog site. We discussed raising money to purchase blue and yellow chords for the seniors to wear at graduation. One fundraising option is collecting old ink cartridges. See Mrs. Taylor to get flyers that can be distributed to houses and businesses in Norton. We discussed Pi day (see the blog below this one to share your thoughts) Members were told to check out the Mu Alpha Theta National Website. www.mualphatheta.org
There are several scholarships available. Hopefully we will get a page on edline so the minutes from our meetings can be posted there.
We have two teams that will be competing for $20,000 each in scholarship money this coming weekend. Wish them luck.
Senior team-Kelly Allen, Gil O'Neil, Ravi Patel, Tim Mollins
Junior team - Kate Baird, Priya Patel, Carolyn Le, Chad McAuliffe

PI Day

Should we have Pi day? I was thinking that it just isn't the same having it on 3-13 instead of 3-14 and the building will be missing all the department heads and administration that Friday(3/13). What do you think?

Pi Day

In order for Pi Day to run smoothly we will need a lot of volunteers. Some people will need to donate a pie while others will need to donate their time to write out math problems and then to hang them up around the school. Volunteers can stay after with me Thursday(3/5), Friday(3/6), or Wednesday(3/11). Then more volunteers will be needed before school Friday (3/13) to hang the math problems around the school. Please comment on this blog with how you will participate in Pi Day festivities. By the way, Mr. Dewar likes blueberry or key lime pie so we need to make sure we have those flavors.

April is math awareness month

We all know that I get carried away with the weather. Especially in the winter with the snow storms. Well today I realized that I am not alone with interest in the weather. The month of April is considered math awareness month and a theme has been chosen for this year. "The American Mathematical Society, the American Statistical Association, the Mathematical Association of America, and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics announce that the theme for Mathematics Awareness Month, April 2009, is Mathematics and Climate." I took that quote from the web site www.mathaware.org. You should check it out some time. I would like to have Mu Alpha Theta think of some activities that Norton High can have during the month of April. We will discuss them at our first meeting which I would like to hold the week we return from February vacation.

February Newsletter

We have two teams that have formed to compete in the Moody’s Mega Math Challenge on March 7. 2009. Good luck to them. Hopefully they can win some scholarship money. I hope everyone has had a chance to check out the scholarships available at www.mualphatheta.com. I gave you the direct link in the last newsletter.

It is time that we elect some officers. We will need a president, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer. If interested please submit your name to me by Wednesday February 4th. We will be having our first official meeting in the very near future and officers will be one topic we discuss. Hopefully we will have our officers elected by the end of February.

Other items that will be on our agenda are Pi Day (3-14) and fundraising ideas. For Pi day I would like to have the same activity we had last year but let the Math Honor Society run it. (Winning a piece of pie by answering questions that were found around the school building) As for fundraising, I thought the group could take over the recycling of empty ink cartridges and cell phones because we can make a little money that way. We will still need another fundraiser. The first items that we will need money for are the yellow and blue cords that the seniors will wear at graduation.

That’s all for now. Please listen to morning announcements to find out when and where we will have our first meeting.
